Paper trail
The bread moves one way. The documents follow it.
A drop lands in the lower city. Minutes later, the same event exists in four versions. On a screen inside the sanctuary, it appears as scheduled supply. In a policy update, it becomes a redistribution adjustment. In a report, it registers as another ingestion case. In a notebook, it’s written as “came early, people misread it, crowd formed too fast.”
None of these cancel the others.
They stack.
Four versions of the same thing
The Mill speaks first.
Clean images, stable tone. The bread is framed before it’s even touched. It arrives as continuity. As something already integrated. ALWAYS FRESH. ALWAYS THE MILL. The message doesn’t wait for the outcome. It sets it in advance.
Sanctuary policies follow.
Access windows shift. Distribution limits tighten. Entry conditions adjust based on what has already happened outside. A line forms at the gate before the directive is even posted. By the time it’s read, people are already moving according to it.
Medical reports lag slightly behind.
They collect what the body did with the bread. Gerben becomes a sequence. Time stamps. Observed stages. Surface changes. Behavioral drift. The report holds him still long enough to compare him to others who have already passed through.
Field notes run alongside everything.
Written in the moment, not after. “Balcony. Ate immediately. Delay shorter than expected.” No classification. No attempt to stabilize it. Just what held long enough to be seen.
All four describe the same system.
None of them match exactly.
Different uses, same flow
Each document type carries a function.
The broadcast fixes perception.
The policy fixes movement.
The report fixes the body into stages.
The note fixes the moment before it disappears.
They don’t operate separately.
A policy reacts to a report. A report contradicts a broadcast. A field note exposes where both fail to hold. The system moves through all of them at once, adjusting as each layer feeds into the next.
Magret moves inside that overlap.
She hears the broadcast while avoiding a corridor that a note warned about. She passes a guard enforcing a rule that came from a report written hours earlier. She adjusts Gerben’s position based on what she has seen, not what has been declared.
The documents shape the space around her.
They don’t match what she’s in.
How it spreads
Information follows the same map as the bread.
Inside the sanctuary, it arrives complete. Screens, directives, reports, all aligned enough to hold a single version of events.
Outside, it breaks apart.
Fragments move hand to hand. A line written on a wall. A phrase passed at a threshold. A notebook left open for someone else to read. The farther it moves from the center, the less it resolves.
Field notes cross the boundary.
They slip between zones, carrying what was seen in one place into another that wasn’t meant to receive it. They connect locations that are supposed to remain separate.
A museum note appears in a stairwell.
A street observation shows up near a gate.
A correction written in one district reappears in another.
The system tries to hold a single version.
The fragments keep multiplying.
What they reveal
Every document explains how things are meant to work.
At the same time, each one carries the mark of what actually happened.
A directive that arrives too late.
A report that can’t account for timing.
A broadcast that cuts before the shift.
A note that contradicts all three.
They don’t resolve the system.
They map it.
From production to ingestion, from ingestion to transformation, from transformation to pursuit. Each layer records a different part of the same sequence, passing it forward in a form that can be read, enforced, or ignored.
Gerben exists in all of them.
As image.
As case.
As warning.
As memory written in the margin.
None of those versions are complete.
Together, they are enough to keep the system moving.
System Role
They circulate as explanations of how things are meant to work while carrying the marks of what actually happens, linking policy to the movements it produces, to the behaviors it shapes, to the transformations it sets in motion; each document passes between institutions, individuals, and the situations they move through, reinforcing the system’s logic even as it quietly reveals its effects at every point of contact.
